Eco Tyre Disposal with Hometyre | Global Recycling Day 2021

Global Recycling Day is on 18^th March 2021, we thought we'd take this as an opportunity to talk to you about how we dispose of our scrap tyres!

We use approved third parties to dispose of and recycle our tyres once they are at the end of their life. Reasons for needing to dispose of a tyre could be anything from an unsafe puncture repair, to worn out tread, right through to the age of a tyre.

Tyres are made up of multiple components – steel, rubber and nylon to name a few! These components can be recycled in various different ways, they can also be reused to produce more tyres, as well as the tyres being reused as a whole.

Recycling a Tyre as Itself!

One way to reuse a tyre in its entirety is as a bumper on a track racecourse, a dressage ring for a horse, or as a playground item for children! We're sure there are many other creative uses for them, some we've seen from our own team at HQ is flower pots, an agility course for a dog and building a tyre snowman or Christmas tree during the festive season!

Recycling as Crumb Rubber

This is the sort of recycled rubber which is used for things such as sports tracks and playgrounds, it provides a soft yet hard wearing surface which is perfect for such grounds. It's not only used on such a large scale, crumb rubber can also be used in items such as mouse pads, door mats and even belts!

Recycled Tyres used as part of the asphalt compound on the M1

A few years back, an eco-friendly tyre-based asphalt was trialled on a section of the M1, this surface contained up to 750 old tyres per kilometre! According to Highways England, the recycled rubber road surfaces boasted both economic and environmentally friendly benefits. By reusing old tyres, Highways England hope to reduce the number of old tyres being exported in the UK.
