Hot weather and your tyres

July 2013 has seen heat records smashed across the UK as a result of a longer period of prolonged high temperatures for a considerable number of years.

Why you should consider your tyres!

Tyres are constructed using mostly a natural product - rubber. From the date of manufacture, rubber naturally ages and deteriorates. From new the product is in its most durable and elastic state. Even without use, over a number of years rubber will harden and perish.

Your tyres may have already covered many thousands of miles and have remained mounted to your wheels for a number of years too. The stresses and strains your tyres are put through each and every time you drive are significant. Couple this wilth the effects of low level ozone and ultra violet light year round as well as crater like potholes and kerb impacts to contend with, your tyres may already be close to breaking point. Unfortunately, often the only real indicator of a tyres current suitability is determined by its failure.

Sun perished tyres
Hot, sunny weather often gives us drivers a sense of security on the roads. Grip naturally improves and cornering speeds tend to rise. Our safety - and that of other road users - is wholly reliant on the ability and condition of our tyres to perform. High ambient temperatures, hot road surfaces and higher speeds result in higher tyre pressures (air expands in heat!).

Notice how many more cars, vans and caravans you'll be seeing on dual carriageways, motorways and A/B roads on hot days? Older tyres already strained and more brittle are unable to deflect foreign objects or absorb them without failing in dramatic fashion. Strips of rubber and steel are often found spread across the road where the tyre has simply been unable to contain the air pressure within and consequently tears apart.

Motorists can avoid the dangers and hassle of roadside blow outs by checking the age and condition of tyres before use. Check out our "How to check your Tyres" page for more info.
