Its Spring again time to check those Caravan Tyres
As Spring approaches its time to start taking the covers off those Caravans (and Motor-homes) in preparation for that 1st trip of the year.
Leisure vehicles are a combination of accommodation and road vehicle therefor maintenance is also a combination of the two.
Inside you have domestic systems to service such as Gas, Electrics, Heating and ventilation. Outside (or underneath) simplistically you have wheels, tyres and brakes to attend to.
Items like brakes should be professionally serviced but some regular checks should be undertaken by the driver.
For example the caravan club recommend that wheel bot torques are checked before every journey. Another check that should be completed is tyre condition, caravan tyres do not normally wear out but the do age and most sudden tyre failures on caravans are in fact due to age deterioration of the rubber.
On every tyre there is a manufacturing date code in the form of wk number then year (WWYY) the caravan club recommend to replace at 5 years and never use at over 7, they further recommend that you start examining tyres for deterioration from 3 years. Needless to say replacing and with cuts, bulges or cracking.
