Can I swap wheel and tyres around my vehicle to even up tyre life?

While having an even tread depth on all four corners of the vehicle will retain the design balance for tyre grip, there are some points to watch, besides are the front and rear tyres the same size?

When mounting a tyre to a wheel rim it is important for most tyres to have the tyre fitted in the correct orientation when fitting the wheel to the car.

Tyres can be :-

Symmetrical - These tyres can face either way, but it is best practice to follow the same way around for all tyres i.e date code out. to help reduce any tendency for pull due to tyre construction.

Asymmetrical - These tyres are marked with an inner and outer sidewall. As above once the tyre is mounted to the wheel correctly it will always be correct on the vehicle.

Directional - These tyres have a directional tread pattern that need to face the correct way on the vehicle. Once mounted to a wheel the assembly is dedicated to the Right or Left hand side of the vehicle. Same size tyres can only be moved front to back not side to side on the vehicle,

Directional Asymmetric Tyre - Rare but when combined with a different size front to back these tyres are dedicated to a particular corner of the vehicle and cannot be moved.

Directional Wheels - These may be a little harder to spot but some wheel are designed for Left Hand or Right Hand side of the vehicle. BMW for instance not only can have different size wheels front to back but can also have LH & RH wheels.
