Are your employees making adequate tyre Safety Checks ?

On several occasions recently, Hometyre West Midlands has changed tyres on company vehicles that are well beyond the legal limit for remaining tread.

Whilst in the first instance the endorsements and fines for un-roadworthy tyres are applied to the driver's licence, there are other costs to the business to consider.

Both companies and employees have responsibility for tyre safety on fleet vehicles.

To maintain Health and Safety obligations employers should make sure that drivers understand their own responsibility for tyre checks.

Current UK law states that car tyres must have a minimum of 1.6 mm of tread across the centre 75% of the tyre tread around the entire circumference.

This will meet the law but to further reduce the risk of accidents and lost time the tyre industry recommends changing tyres at 3mm remaining tread as this is the point that wet weather grip falls away significantly.

A weekly vehicle safety check of fluid levels, tyre pressures and tread depths will help to identify issues early increase tyre life and reduce repair costs and down time for the fleet.

Using a mobile tyre fitting service such as Hometyre will also reduce costs associated with employees sitting in waiting rooms or vehicle down time, while tyres are fitted at static sites.
