Puncture Repairs While Working From Home in Norwich

Despite using their vehicles less than usual, the chances of picking up a puncture or needing a tyre change are still very present! One common occurrence, especially with older vehicles, is for corrosion to build up around the rim. This can be due to the vehicle not being used as much as normal and being left in the same position with its weight on it.

We recently went out to a BMW X3 that had a similar problem, we attended the vehicle at a customer's home in Norwich. The tyres weren't very old and had ample tread. The customer hadn't used the car in the week prior and went to pop to the shop, they pulled about 20metres from their driveway and realised that the tyre was completely flat. The customer was baffled as she hadn't been using the vehicle. They contacted Hometyre, who went out to their house, as they were working from home. We leak tested the tyre and I was leaking from the bottom bead of the rim. This vehicle was from 2013, so only 8 years old, but this corrosion had built up over this time period.

We carried out a bead seal, which is where we clean off all the corrosion and used string sealer around the rim to prevent this happening again. This should last until the tyre is next removed and the seal is broken. We replaced the tyre with a new premium Dunlop (225/60R17), as the customer had driven only a short distance but caused damage to the tyre.

The very same day, we had the very same problem on a Vauxhall Corsa, in Diss. This vehicle was 10 years old (2011). The tyre, a 195/55R16 budget Riken, was replaced as the tyre was perished and ageing. This issue was repaired the same way for a customer who was shielding.
