TPMS Error Lights!
A few months ago, the requirements to pass the MOT’s test
changed slightly to include factors affecting the TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring
System) units. All cars registered after 1st January 2012 are
required to show no TPMS warning lights on the dashboard. If a light is present,
this is an automatic fail. But, not having a warning light on the dashboard
does not mean there aren’t any errors!
Sometimes, a unit can have an incredibly slow leaky valve or even dead battery and yet the system does not pick this issue up. For example, this customer checked their tyres on a weekly basis but encountered a nail during one morning drive to work. As the TPMS unit had a dead battery, the error was not reported to the dashboard and the customer continued to drive with no knowledge of the tyre being under inflated and going flat! Luckily for the customer, there was only visual damage to the alloy. Although, the tyre was completely shredded. The customer was booked in for as soon as possible at their workplace where we replaced the tyre and changed the old non-functioning sensor for a new unit.
In order to change the unit over, we must have the old unit. From the old unit, we can extract the DNA and copy it over into the new system. From here, the new sensor is installed back into the wheel and the system reset. A relatively simple process if you have the knowhow!
Speaking of resetting TPMS systems, sadly there is no ‘one process
fits all’ solution. After a few miles, one vehicle may self-learn and calibrate
the sensors. Another vehicle may require you to press a button hidden in the
glove box. It’s always best to look at your owner’s manual to double check what to do.
If your TPMS system is displaying errors, not functioning or
needs its parts serviced, why not give us a call on 0333 444 5454 or send an
enquiry to info@hometyre.co.uk!
