The Future of Tyres? | Michelin Uptis

A creation from the brain bots at Michelin, the Uptis Airless Tyre promises to be longer lasting, fuel saving and recyclable… so will it keep the turtles happy and save us a bit of cash? Michelin may be onto a winner here! Game changing new tech means common fears such as punctures, side wall damage and uneven tread wear caused by incorrect tyre pressure are simply problems of the past. Things that the modern-day driver eventually may never have to face when fitted with the Uptis.

Looking like something that has been picked up straight from a Tron set the Uptis isn't the prettiest thing but what it lacks in the looks it more than makes up for in ingenuity. Made from a mixture of standard rubber coupled with a ultra light and strong fiberglass blend the Uptis not only increases performance due to a significant weight cut but also has the ability to adapt with the specific requirements of the vehicle it has been tailored for.

Don't fix what ain't broken. This may be the Achilles' heel of the Uptis. Conventional tyres currently are performing significantly better across a few key areas due to certain design flaws of the Uptis. Areas such as a low tyre tread life and high rolling noise levels are aspects Michelin are still trying to fixture out with this one. Dissipation of heat is a process the Uptis appears to drop marks in, most of their applications are vehicles that don't drive fast, so no issue there; but stick the Uptis tire on a highway vehicle and it will heat up and fail very quickly.

The Uptis is still years away from hitting the market so you won't find it in on our website any time soon! You also won't be able to find it anywhere else in the market! This really could go either way… it has the potential to be massively ground-breaking or this could just be the Fyre Festival of the Tyre world.
