North London Caravan Tyre Replacement in Storage | Hometyre Mobile Tyron and Caravan Tyre Changing

As the winter weather is now letting up, we are receiving a large influx of enquiries and orders for new tyres to be installed onto caravans and motorhomes. With caravans coming out of storage to be washed and service engineers going over everything, more and more people are reporting that their tyres are becoming too old for usage.

As per the Caravan club's recommendation, the time to change caravan tyres is around 5-7 years. But why is this? There is still plenty of tread left on them? Looking at the tread, yes, there probably is many thousands of miles left in them. But, looking between the grooves you might start to notice cracks and signs of perishing. Most caravans are stored outside and can sit for many months at a time. An abundance of UV rays which makes the rubber in the tyre brittle combined with rapid temperature changes causes stress in the tyre and ultimately the cracks that you see.

One of the best ways to store caravan tyres is to take the wheels off during the seasonal storage and place them on a rack in a dark dry area. Rotate these every month or two to prevent flat-spotting.

Alternatively, if they have to be kept on the caravan, like above, rotate them every couple months and try to cover them as best as possible!

We recently headed out to customer on a storage site in North Watford who's recent caravan service identified that the tyres were starting to crack and needed to be changed over. Calling us for a mobile appointment to meet at the storage yard, we booked the customer in for his preferred date and specific time.

Calling the client about an hour before to provide an eta, we arrived on site and proceeded with the changeover only to find that the wheels had Tyron bands installed. This hadn't been identified to the current owner by the previous owner but luckily, we are fully Tyron certified and carry the equipment to work on the bands during the demounting of the old tyres and the installation of the new tyres.

Just as a quick note, some reader might not know what Tyron bands are. To keep it simple, they are metal bands that go onto the wheels inside of the tyre to prevent the bead of the tyre slipping off during a tyre deflation. You can find a bit more information on this here.
