Although a rare sight in central London, finding a caravan storage site becomes more and more common the further North or East you get. Unlike the main reason for changing a car tyre, age, not wear, is the ultimate killer of caravan tyres. As per the Caravan Club’s recommendation, tyres to these vehicles, should be changed around the five-year mark. Due to the low number of miles and often being stored outside open to the elements, these tyres will perish and start to crack faster than those being stored inside or driven on a daily basis. But why is this? UV rays penetrate the side of the rubber and after a long exposure, will start to evaporate the elastic compounds cause ‘rot’. However, in some instances, although the sidewall of the tyre may look perfectly fine the tread may be a different story as the tread blocks start to delaminate from the carcass of the tyre.
