Self Sealing Falken 'Coreseal' Hits the Market! | Hometyre Mobile Puncture Repairs
Seal-sealing tyres aren't a rare tyre. Quite the contrary. Often found in the bigger SUV market and particularly on VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) products that aren't supplied with a spare. Self-sealing tyres contain a thick gel like layer on the internal three quarters of the tyre that covers the tread area. In the event of a puncture (below 5mm) this thick gel will be pushed along-side the object creating an airtight seal allowing the user to continue their journey. They may not even notice it's happened!
Falken, an old Japanese brand from 1983, have been performing research into this area and have created a proprietary system stemming from the above nicknamed 'Coreseal'. Currently these tyres will only be available in Europe in their all-season format (Falken AS210) in both 175/65R15 and 255/45R20 sizes. To ensure the best safety possible, Falken also recommends the vehicle be equipped with a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) and that punctures should be checked by a tyre professional should they occur. The main downside to leaving a puncture alone in a sealed tyre is that the object can start to rust or move about causing more damage making the area around the puncture more brittle. This could eventually lead to a blow-out.
We at Hometyre will repair a seal tyre if it is safe and legal to do so, as well as it being of economic value to the customer. There is much more work to repair a self sealing tyre compared to a conventional tyre due to that thick layer of gel. This will need to be scrapped away, cleaned back and the puncture repair performed.
