Do you check your spare wheel?

If you are lucky enough to have a spare wheel rather than an inflation kit, especially on an older vehicle, do you ever check it? Manufacturers often tuck the spare wheel in a position that makes access to it very difficult. It could be mounted underneath the car and needs to be lowered down by operating a mechanism to extend a wire cord. Sometimes it might be in a cradle that needs to be lowered down. If it is in the boot it will be in a well and the contents of your boot will be stored on top. Given its inaccessibility, maybe set a little time aside at the weekend to learn how to gain access to it and operate the mechanism if there is one. Doing this when you are not under pressure at the side of the road will prepare you for when you really need to get to it in earnest. Once you have found it and maybe removed it you should take the opportunity to check its condition and pressure. The space saver wheels usually need 60 psi and they do not need to lose much air for the pressure to drop considerably. If it is a full size spare then it just needs to be pressurised to the same pressure as your other tyres.

Often, on older cars, you will find that the full size spare has been used to replace a worn tyre and the worn tyre is retained as the spare. So it may have a minimal amount of tread. If you bought the car second hand you might find the spare is punctured and has simply never been repaired/ replaced. You might also find that the spare is excessively old and suffering from age related issues such as cracking.

Anyway, once you have checked you spare tyre, rectified any issues such as underinflation, and learnt how to access it and operate any mechanism then you can undertake your daily commute or holiday journey with an increased sense of confidence. It is a job worth doing!
