Two New Pirelli Tyres for an Audi S3 in Leatherhead

We recently had a customer call in with an Audi S3 looking at a couple new tyres for the front of their vehicle. Being a performance vehicle, the customer opted to go for grippy tyres to help put the power down to the road. In this instance, the Pirelli PZero was the preferred choice.

Upon arrival we inspected all four tyres for any signs of unusual wear or damage. This information was then recorded in the tyre inspection report. Fortunately, everything was in order but, the rear tyres were starting to show signs of hard wear (they were just below 3mm). With the inspection completed, we jacked the front of the vehicle up and placed it onto jackstands. The front wheels were then removed and popped onto our workbench in the van.

Before the installation of the tyres, the wheels were given a thorough inspection. As the sidewalls were quite slim and being a performance car with harder suspension, potholes and curbs can cause more damage compared to the normal SUVs we see roaming about on the road. During the inspection we did notice some surface corrosion where the bead of the tyre seals against the wheel. This quite normal for most vehicles and can easily be rectified by cleaning the area back with a wire brush, some isopropyl alcohol and applying a thin layer of sealant. After the bead seal, the new 225/40 R18 Pirelli PZero was installed, inflated and balanced on our machine. This process was then repeated with the other side.

After the tyre change, the wheels were popped back onto the car, the nuts hand tightened and then lowered to the floor where wecould torque the nuts to the correct setting. This information can be found on the door sill, behind the fuel door or even in the manual. With everything back in order, the car was given a final inspection and all areas wiped down. Due to the recent pandemic, we are trying to avoid contact with customers as much as possible.
