Aston Martins and MG's in Ashford | Hometyre Classic and Vintage Tyre Changing
Tubes, bent valves and bead tape, common vocabulary for the classic car enthusiasts! Over the last month, we’ve been on a role with classic cars as they start to emerge from their winter hibernation. Two of the more notable ones were this lovely dark blue Aston Martin DB6 and a contrasting cream MGA. Unlike modern vehicles, these classics have tubes installed into the wire wheels as the wheels aren’t completely airtight. In addition, because the ends of the ‘spokes’ stick through the rim, these sharp cuts need to be protected from the tube otherwise they will pop the tube! Using bead tape, this adds a barrier of protection and ensures that that tube isn’t punctured by the spokes and helps to keep it in place.
Although we have numerous suppliers that can source vintage, classic and unusual brands, sometimes tyres are made in a different country and it’s not something we can get a hold of. The classic car centre in Ashford were working on this stunning Aston Martin and needed to source their tyres directly from Avon in the United States as they were one of only two people producing them! Having sourced the new tyres, we headed out to the customer to swap the tyres and tubes over at the restoration centre.
The customer with the MGA in Kennington (Ashford) was also
into the same situation. Although there are still plenty of brands available in
a 165/80R15, this customer had chosen to source Blockley tyres for their great
reviews and their ability to keep the tyre looking period correct whilst using
modern manufacturing techniques and compounds! Again, this vehicle needed tubes
to be installed of which we supplied and fitted during the installation of the
tyres.
