Michelin's New Pilot Sport EV Tyres, Designed on the Track, Made for the Road

Learning from their presence in the Formula E world, Michelin are evolving the Pilot Sport series of tyres with an off shoot specifically for EV (Electric Vehicles). Starting with 18inch tyres, these are commonly found in the Formula race series (E/F1) Michelin will be diversifying the line up to include up to 16 different sizes ranging from 18 to 22 inches.

Using tread and compound technology from the formula E series, the new Pilot Sport EV tyre will incorporate Michelin's ElectricGrip CompoundTM technology which features a harder compound in the centre of the tread to provide increased grip for handing the higher torque applications of electric vehicles.

An important factor for Michelin about this tyre is that it will be CO2 neutral at the point of sale. During the production and first shipment of the tyre, Michelin will off-set any CO2 emissions by investing into projects that aim to offset and absorb the residual CO2 emissions associated with the tyre production.

One final positive is the claimed lower rolling resistance can extend the range by up to 37 miles. Although to non EV drivers, this may not seem an awful lot, to those who have been in the perilous position of low energy reserves, this extra mileage can be a life saver.

Currently, the Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyre is only available in China but should be making its way to Europe within the next year or so. With the growth of electric vehicles exponentially increasing, we hope to see these tyres lands sooner!
