There are two main things to look at when checking your caravan tyres; the DOT codes and the size. In order to supply the correct tyres, we need the correct size! This is found directly on the side of the tyre and is often the largest writing and be formatted in one of two ways, see below;

On all passenger vehicles, the size is three numbers, a forward slash followed by two more numbers and finishing with a R two numbers. But, in one of the images above, you can see that the two middle numbers are missing. For some reason, lost to history and only known by those at the top, if these two numbers are missing then the industry standard is to use 80. For example, 185R14 would be 185/80R14.

What are the most common caravan sizes? Currently the most popular sizes are 185R14, 195/70R14 and 215/70R15 but are changing on a yearly basis. There isn't a "one size fits all tyre" so always check your size!

But what is a DOT code and where can I find it? Date codes or colloquially known as DOT codes are stamps used by tyre manufactures to identify the week at which the tyre was made. Hometyre provides some of the newest DOT codes on the market and, if requested, can relay said codes to you once they have arrived from our warehouse.

How old are my tyres? Locating the DOT code is a little trickier as it's smaller than the size. For this millennium, you will see a four-digit code in pill shaped circle (see below). The first two numbers correlate to the week at which the tyre was made, and the second two numbers are the year. For example, if the code was [0322] then this would be the third week of 2022. But, some caravans that have been static for a long period of time might see tyres from the 80s or even before! Tyres manufactured in years between 1990 to 2000 will have three numbers then an arrow. Thus; 395? would be the third week of 1995. Tyres pre 1990 will just have three numbers so makes it even more tricky to find!
