A full set of tyres for a local warden at a Caravan site in Keswick

We were called out to the Camping & Caravan Club in Keswick to replace all 4 tyres on this Nissan Navara for one of the wardens on site, he chose to go with the premium brand Goodyear.

When we were replacing the tyres, we checked the spare wheel and the valve on the spare was extremely perished, we replaced the valve and pumped up the spare ready for any emergency flats this motorist might face on the country lanes here in the Lakes!

Whilst having a little catch up with the site warden, we discussed the busy season ahead! Now the winter is almost over and done with, people will start looking into bringing their caravans out of hibernation and checking them over for the upcoming caravan season.

It is important to check your caravan tyres for signs of ageing, one of the most common needs to replace a tyre on a caravan is because of age. If cracks begin to appear in the sidewalls or the rubber starts to perish it could potentially lead to much bigger problems! There is an easy way to check the age of your caravan tyres, look for the DOT code on the sidewall of the tyre, this is like an age stamp for your tyre. If it reads "3018", it was made in the 30th week of 2018.

Once your tyres reach 5-7 years old we highly recommend you replace them, even if they have ample tread they are most likely not performing as you would like them to. Many caravan owners stick with budget tyres due to this, budget tyre brands are constantly coming in and out of stock in the UK, although most budget tyres do the same thing! If you only go on a couple of trips a year with your caravan then this is the option for you. If you want to spend money on a good set of tyres, the best thing to do is get them for the vehicle which is towing the caravan!

If you want to go a step up and go for mid-range tyres we would recommend the GT Radial ST-6000, as shown below, this tyre has been designed specifically for caravan and trailer usage. It has enhanced sidewall protection and a heavier duty compound allowing it to take the additional weight of a caravan.

Have you considered fitting TYRON™ Bands to your caravan or motorhome?

TYRON™ Bands do exactly what they say on the tin! They keep the TYRE-ON in the event of a blowout. When you're towing a caravan, if a blowout occurs you may not notice the initial impact and you run the risk of the entire caravan tipping over on a road which could lead to a major incident.
