Run-Flat, Runflat and Run On Flat Tyres in Bristol, What Are They? | Hometyre Mobile Run-Flat Tyre Replacements
On the internet, you may find the words; Run-Flat, Runflat or Run On Flat being thrown around when talking about BMW or Mercedes-Benz tyres. Firstly, all three of the above naming schemes are technically correct and isn't one correct answer as they all use the same technology. Said technology is a reinforced sidewall so that if the tyre were to encounter a sudden pressure loss, the sidewall of the tyre could hold up the vehicle and allow the driver to get to a safe location. Usually, most tyre brands allow the driver to drive 50km at a maximum speed of 50km/h but you will need to check this with your manufacture.
How does this technology actually work?
As mentioned above, the sidewall of the tyre has been reinforced with more ply layers. As a result, the
Once a sudden air loss occurs, the bead of the tyre will become unseated from the main bead and shift into a secondary bead well in the wheel (see below!) preventing the tyre from coming off of the rim. The requirement of a secondary bead means that run-flat tyres can't be used on standard rims so no run-flat tyres for your Volkswagen golf unless you have the correct rims! However, there is one way to install run-flat tyres onto normal rims, and that is by using a Tyron band. These metal bands are installed into the well of the wheel and like the secondary bead on those run-flat specific rims, stop the bead from entering the well and coming off of the rim!
There are only a certain number of vehicles manufactures that use run-flat tyres nowadays; BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Mini and Alfa-Romeo. Although not on every vehicle, these manufacturers are ones you will run-flats installed more often.
I have one of these vehicles but can't see any markings designated as Run-Flat, Run On Flat or Runflat. How do I know what it is?

Please note that there are a couple of downsides to the run-flat tyre. They are notably much heavier and stiffer compared to the standard tyres so if you're looking for comfort or reduced lap times, think about standard tyres. Also, until approval has been achieved from all major run-flat manufactures, we will not repair run-flat tyres under the BSAU159 tyre safety code.
