Summer vs All Season tyres in the UK?

We're all long-suffering recipients of cold wet weather here in the UK. The trend towards winter tyres is certainly growing along with the awareness of the benefits. It could be argued that our climate could potentially allow for the use of cold weather tyres year round. While these products offer the best benefits below 7C, they also dramatically improve wet braking abilities in all temperatures.

The only downside to year-round use of winter type tyres is a small reduction in fuel economy. this is as a direct result of the incredible traction and adherence to road surfaces.

Therefore perhaps the all season tyre will offer UK motorists the best protection year round? Summer tyres provide optimum driving 'feel' and response during summer months but dramatically lose grip and braking ability as the temperatures lower.
