Road Safety Week 2019 – be safe on the roads this winter!
Road Safety Week 2019 is running from 18th November to 24th November, this is an annual event organised by the road safety charity, 'Brake'.
This is a great way to raise awareness for the importance of road safety, with thousands of organisations, schools and communities taking part!
Here at Hometyre, we are urging you to do your part. You can drastically raise your safety levels on our roads by regularly checking your tyres. Just a few simple checks once a month could help to prevent a serious accident.
CHECK YOUR TREAD DEPTHS
The legal tread depth in the UK for cars is 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central ¾ of the tread, if you are stopped and found to be below this then the maximum fine is £2,500 per tyre and 3 points on your licence - which I'm sure you will agree are 2 things that nobody needs.
As well as the hefty financial burden, you are also much less safe on the roads. Your braking distances will be increased and your chance of aquaplaning will also be higher which could lead to a serious accident.
The recommended time to change your tyres is when the tread depths reach 3mm, it's so quick and easy to check your tread depths, just go out to your vehicle with a 20p coin and do the reliable 20p test! When you put the coin in between the grooves if you can see the border around the edge of the coin then your tyres are illegal! If you cannot see it and the 20p sits nicely in the groove your tyres are road legal.
CHECK YOUR TYRE PRESSURES
Having incorrect pressures in your tyres can result in them having uneven wear on both sides to a degree where damage can be so great that the tyres needed to be replaced.
With the correct pressure, tyres should last between 10 and 20 thousand miles, not only is it expensive to replace your tyres early, it also affects the vehicles fuel consumption. We all know extra visits to the petrol station are an unwanted expense but more importantly is the effect on the car itself.
Typically the car manufacturer will display the correct pressures in the fuel cap or the inside of the door, if you cannot locate them, you should be able to find them in the owner's manual.
CHECK YOUR TYRES FOR CUTS AND BULGES
You may have a bulge in your tyre and not even realise it! In the UK, we are not short of our fair share of pot holes, hitting one of these pesky things can damage the sidewall of your tyre, resulting in a bulge.
If the structural integrity of the sidewall is weakened, this can result in a visible bulge, this may not even be an instant thing so make sure you keep an eye on your tyres if you think you might have collided with a pot hole lately!
