Don’t be scary on the road this Halloween – check your tyres!

October has almost come to an end which means today is HALLOWEEN! As well as getting out there to do your trick or treating this evening, why don't you spend a couple of minutes outside checking your tyres! We know the weather isn't the warmest right now but don't let it stop you from ensuring your tread depths are safe and legal!

One way you can check your tyres is shown above. The classic '20p test', grab a 20p and if the ridge around the edge is visible, your tyres are TOO LOW! If the ridge around the 20p is hidden in the tread then your tyres are safe and legal.

If your tread depths are below 3mm, the performance of your tyres will worsen. Once they reach below 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central ¾ of the tread they are completely illegal. Bald tyres are not only dangerous for you but are SCARY for other motorists but can also result in a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 points on your licence PER TYRE.

Across the 12-month period, 446 accidents were linked to defective tyres, beating faulty brakes to the top spot by 81"
