The Sun's Coming Out in Shropshire! | Hometyre Mobile Caravan Tyre Changing Service

Hark the sun is coming out!

With everything going on in the world right now, sometimes it's nice to get away to the scenic countryside. But, for those who are having their caravan serviced, one of the main problems that the service engineers will show you is that the tyres are too old and need to be changed as soon as possible!

As recommended by the Caravan Club, at five years old, a caravan's may be changed.

But why and how do I know the age of my tyres?

Finding the age of your tyres is the easy bit (if you also need to find the size, you can click here!). In a small pill shaped circle, you will find four numbers of which you can see below. The first two numbers represent the week in which the tyre was made whilst the last two numbers are the year. In the below instance, this would be the 22nd week of 2021.

This system was implemented in the year 2000. You will very rarely find tyres older than this but can happen! Tyres pre 2000 will have a slightly different code; three numbers or three numbers with a triangle. The first number would be the week number corresponding to a month (not specified) and the last two numbers the year. 397 ? for example could be the 3rd week of April, the 3rd week of September or the 3rd week of January but will definitely be from 1998.

But why do I need to change my tyres after five years? There is plenty of tread left!

Unlike car tyres which are often used multiple times a day, a caravan is seldom used on a daily or weekly basis often with it being stored for multiple months at a time. As a tyre travels down the road, heat is introduced into the tread and caraccas ensuring that it stays flexible and malleable. If a tyre is left outside in the elements for many months or years at a time without movement, the flexible compounds in the tyre will start to evaporate creating cracks in the tyre and making it more brittle. If said tyre was driven down the road, there's a good change it could blow as the heat in the tyre expands the tread creating gaps.

You can see from the below image that although there is still lots of tread left, cracks are starting to appear in the sipes and grooves.
