Tyres in Chipping Norton - Preparing Your Car for Winter...
With summer officially behind us and the prospect of winter ahead, it's probably not a bad time to be thinking about vehicle maintenance and preparation for those colder, wetter months that lie ahead!
While we don't always suffer the worst of the weather here in Chipping Norton and local areas, it's certainly not out of the question to be on the receiving end of some severe winter weather every now and then. Around other more northern areas of the UK, our other mobile tyre fitters work hard during the late autumn swapping over summer tyres to winter tyres for thousands of motorists. Winter tyres allow for incredible grip and traction even in fairly heavy snow fall conditions, and certainly provide more surefootedness when the mercury drops below 7C!
Here in the Cotswolds and Oxfordshire, when the temperature drops and the roads are wet, a great alternative product is the ever more popular All Season tyre! These offer year-round performance without compromise whatever the weather. A great option if your vehicle is in need of new tyres soon.
Of course, you'll need good tread depth for the coming months. A minimum of 3mm ideally - and tyres that aren't cracked or split, of course. Keeping them properly pressurised will ensure optimum performance, fuel economy and braking efficiency and should really be something you check weekly.
It's not all about tyres though! Some other important considerations in preparation for winter:
- Check all lights are in good order and are clear and bright
- make sure your spare tyre (if fitted) is fit for purpose and has sufficient pressure for use
- check you have a warning triangle and hi-vis for you and all passengers
- keep warm clothing and mobile phone chargers in the car
- Ensure the glass is properly cleaned to avoid low level sunlight disruption to vision
- Regularly check all fluids and keep your screen wash diluted with antifreeze.
Finally, don't forget to alter your driving style! Cold surfaces take much longer to brake upon and distances between you and the car in front should be increased.
