What are Winter tyres, and why are they better in the cold?

Silicone. That’s it. These types of tyres are unique in that they have additional silicone in the compound which helps prevent them from hardening in temperatures below 7*c. That’s the internals of the tyre but on the outside they also look completely different. Most winter tyres are directional (they point in one direction and need to be installed to the vehicle correctly!) and thus are really good at shoving water through the grooves and out of the way. In addition, they have a large number of sipes (little groves) in the tread that, like an angry spider, help to grab the road and pull the tyre along through ice, snow and mud. This tends to be the main reason as to why winter tyres wear slightly faster in warmer weather.
