Punctures can be a pain, however some are fixable. If you get a puncture in the central 3/4 tread of the tyre, it could be possible for it to be repaired, depending on the damage inside the tyre. Punctures cannot be repaired if, a foreign object has pierced the shoulder of the tyre or the sidewall. This is because, the patch used for repairs will bend in these areas, allowing air to escape, not sealing the tyre as is possible in the central 3/4.

The damage inside the tyre, which is not discoverable until the tyre is removed. Hometyre will never repair a puncture unless it is safe to do so. This is why, to make our practice time efficient, we always bring a tyre to a puncture repair, even though we always try to repair first, as it is the cheapest option for our customers, but safety is our main priority.

Punctures can be caused by a variety of foreign objects, such as:

nails,

glass,

flint,

stones,

and other sharp objects.

A growing amount of potholes on our roads is causing a growing amount of punctures. Especially as the weather turns and the rain means you cannot see the depth of these holes.

Tyre tread can also cause punctures, as the lower the tread, the more likely a puncture. As there is less tread for foreign objects to repel from. In this case, the most likely place for the tyre to puncture is the rear, because as you travel over the object( hardly ever standing up straight, eg. A nail), the front tread picks it up and throws it to the back wheels, so the lower the tread to more likely the puncture will be, as it hasn't got as much to repel from.

Another common reason for punctures is due to the age of the tyre. The recommended time to change your tyre is every 5-6 years. The reason for this is older tyres begin to perish, causing cracks and weakening the tyre. All it takes is a crack to turn to a split (this is very common) or a foreign object to hit the crack to open it up into a split in the tyre (puncture).
