Planning a trip to Europe this winter? Check their tyre regulations!

The idea of getting on a plane for a short break this winter may not be everybody's cup of tea. However, you might be desperate to get away and more inclined to jump in your own vehicle and head over to Europe for a short break.

If you're planning on driving to France, Switzerland, Germany or any other sought-after European winter wonderland this year, make sure you've checked the specific rules and regulations for the country you're going to be driving in.

Unlike the UK, many European countries have more strict regulations when driving on their road during the winter months and unfortunately pleading ignorance might not get you out of a tricky situation! It is your responsibility to read up on their rules and prepare your vehicle accordingly.

Tread Depth Laws on Winter Tyres

Where winter tyres are required as standard, the minimum tread depth is usually 3mm (except for the Czech Republic which now require a 4mm minimum).

These requirements apply to all motorists. For visitors to some European countries the use of summer tyres with chains is permissible (where local signage dictates their use) instead of winter tyres. You should check with your travel adviser for any changes to local winter tyre regulations before you leave.

It should be noted, however, that winter tyres offer the safest handling and performance not just in snow and ice but on cold wet roads too and should always be fitted as a first choice.

Most Commonly Visited Countries - LAWS ON WINTER TYRES!

Winter Tyre Regulations in France

Winter tyres are NOT compulsory in France, however in the event of an accident, a lack of winter tyres could be used against you for determining the responsibility for damage caused.

Snow chains are not compulsory either, other than on the French access road to the Mont Blanc tunnel. Here it is compulsory to have snow chains between 1st October and 30th April.

Winter Tyre Regulations in Switzerland

Winter tyres can be rendered compulsory on very specific roads and will be clearly indicated as such via road signage. There are no general mandatory regulations for the use of winter tyres otherwise but the lack of fitment can constitute an important argument in the event of accident or collision.

Snow Chains are compulsory only on indicated roads. Chains must be fitted across a driven axle and must be constructed of metal or a comparably FRA approved material.

Winter Tyre Regulations in Germany

The law on winter tyres in Germany was amended in 2015 to require the use of winter tyres when conditions are icy/snowy. If you are driving in winter conditions, all vehicles must be fitted with winter tyres.

Snow chains must be fitted on the tyres of the driving axle of the towing vehicle, with maximum speeds of 50km/h. Snow chains are allowed on trailers, providing the towing vehicle is also equipped with them.
