How To Choose Your Caravan Tyres
Choosing Your Caravans Tyres
When To Change
It is unlikely your caravan tyres will ever cover the miles to cause the tread of your tyres to wear out. not only this the stress on the tyre being towed along is nowhere near the same as the stresses your car tyres go through with much harder braking, cornering and accelerating.
Regardless of use or mileage, caravan tyres have a lifespan. Even a tyre never driven on will deteriorate over time. Natural aging of the composite materials that form a tyre occurs from day one. It is widely recommended that caravan tyres should be replaced at 5 years old. Many caravan insurance companies will not pay-out on an incident caused by a tyre failure where the tyre is over 5 years old.
The information you need to find out the age of the tyre is found on the sidewall, and denoted by either 3 numbers if manufactured before 2000, or four numbers after 2000. For example:
349
Where 34 denotes the week of manufacture and 9 represents the year - 1999.
This tyre was manufactured in the 34th week of 1999.
2107
Where 21 denotes the week of manufacture and 07 represents the year - 2007,
meaning this tyre was made in the 21st week of 2007.
Which Tyres?
It is imperative that you get the correct size, speed and load rating tyres. The correct tyre size will be on the information plate of your caravan, or in your handbook. it is worth double checking this information, especially if you are not the fist owner of the caravan.
Tyres should always be replaced with the same or better speed and load rating, again if you are not the first owner it is advisable to check your information to ensure you are replacing the correct speed and load rating. Failure to fit the correct speed and load rated tyres can be dangerous and invalidate your insurance.

Brands, Brands, Brands
Once you have chosen the correct size, speed and load rating you will, no doubt, have choices of brands of tyres to choose from.
As previously stated caravan tyres do not experience the same stresses that a car tyre does, so many users choose to fit a budget option. Budget tyres will not perish any quicker than a more expensive alternative, nor will they wear much faster that a more expensive tyre. This said many users prefer to go with a brand they know and recognise or replace with a like-for-like tyre.
One thing is for sure, the easiest way to replace your caravans tyres is to call Hometyre on 0114 3453465
