Gearing up to head out in the caravan or motorhome this
summer? Check your tyres!
The number of blowouts on the motorways relating to old or
damaged tyres has increased exponentially as caravans and motorhomes have
boomed in popularity over the advent of lockdown.
Checking the age of your tyre has never been easier. As per the caravan club’s recommendations, once a tyre reaches five years old, it should be changed. On the side of the tyre, there will be a multitude of numbers and letters. The one that you’ll be looking for will be four numbers in a pill shaped circle (such as the below image) and could say 3321. The first two numbers would stand for the week of manufacture and the second being the year.
But what if your tyre only has three numbers? Well, this is a very old tyre! For tyres that have three numbers and a triangle, this would be 1998 so definitely past its sell by date. You can, very rarely, find tyres that are even older than this but will just be three numbers like the below image. This tyres is from 1988!
With safety at the forefront of people minds, one way to
help control a caravan in the event of a blowout or puncture whilst driving is
to install Tyron bands. These metal bands are installed in the well of the
wheel and stop the tyre from breaking loose of the bead in the event of a loss
of pressure. Not many companies can say they are fully endorsed by Tyron to
install their products, let alone service them during the installation of the
tyres.
