Motorists to Be Banned From Parking on Pavements

Although already illegal in a majority of London and being put into effect from 2023 in Scotland, councils in England and Wales will now be given the power to issue fines for motorists who park on the pavement.

Most bookings nowadays are related somewhat to a tyre being damaged from a collision with either a pothole or curb. Bumping into a curb at speed, even relatively low speed can put excess stress onto the side wall of the tyre. Slowly going up a curb straight on (at a right angle) will put the stress onto the main tread area of the tyre, the most reinforced area, and should be perfectly fine. However, going up the curb at an acute angle will pinch the wall, rip the cords then tear the tyre causing either an immediate deflation or a slow leak from the tear. Normally the only way a client finds out about a slow puncture/tear is when the TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) fires up and issues a warning to the dashboard.

Potholes are becoming rampant as our roads start to crumble from the constant rain and fluctuating temperature causing water to freeze, expand and then erode the earth underneath the road causing a 'cave in' effect. Hitting the edge of these holes can cause serious and instantaneous damage to the tyre and isn't something that can be repaired even if the tyre looks OK from the outside and still has plenty of tread. The reason this can't be saved is that the internal structure by ripping reinforcing cords allowing pressure to build up on the weakened area eventually causing a blowout or bubble on the tyre. In addition to the tyre, the alignment of the vehicle may be knocked out. If incorrectly aligned, the fuel economy of the vehicle, wear rate and safety at speed can all be compromised. Rule Changes to Towing

Over the past couple of years, with the advent of lockdown, caravan sales have boomed and reached new heights. Alongside this, increased internet sales have reflected an increased demand for HGV drivers which is now creating a massive shortage. From December 21st 2021, the government will scrap the need for an additional test for towing trailers up to 3,500kg MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass). By relaxing the rules, the government this will lead to more than 30,000 HGV tests and thus rectifying the shortage. Scrapping the need for the additional test will also create even more popularity in the caravan sector as some fear these tests. But, is this a good idea?

Before heading out this spring or summer, don't forget to check the condition of your caravan's tyres. These are the main point of safety connecting the caravan to the road and it's vital that these are in the best shape possible. What about tyres? Are there any changes to the laws regarding tyres?

No, not at the moment. With the part-worn tyre industry thankfully becoming extinct, tyre laws have stayed relatively the same over the last few years. 1.6mm is the minimum tread depth for any tyre with 3mm being the suggested depth to change. If stopped with tyres below 1.6mm, the maximum fine is 3 points and up to £2,500 per tyre below this depth.
