Air Is Leaking From My Tpms (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) Valve, What's Happening? | Hometyre Tpms Valve Repair or Replacements

In our modern age, many of the new vehicles we see on the road use a TPMS system. But what does that mean? A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System continually monitors the tyre's pressure and relays this information to the driver. Either by using the ABS system to calculate the rolling circumference of the tyre or by using a valve in the wheel to monitor the air pressure. Over time, issues can occur with both systems with corrosion being the most common.

A tyre is sealed on the bead of the rim through pressure. But, in order to inflate said tyre, there needs to be a hole through to the inside. Preventing any air from escaping, a rubber valve is installed. But, in some modern cars, this rubber valve has been replaced by a metal TPMS valve and unit which allows the driver to monitor their tyre pressures on the fly through their on board display! These TPMS valves are primarily made of metal and have many components. As our lands generally have rain every other day, your wheels will probably encounter a lot of puddles in their lifetime and like most components on the car, these metal parts will start to corrode over time. You may not notice this from the outside but one day the system might start to fail or throw some error codes. Not only do the metal parts on the TPMS unit start to corrode but the area around the valve's rubber gromet can show signs of corrosion from the water ingress over many years.

Air in its natural state contains water moisture. Compressing the air as used to inflate tyres, effectively forces this moisture to become dense. With sufficient pressure, droplets of water can form inside the tyre. If this droplet encounters the TPMS unit, then issues may occur. In addition, if this water ingress is persistent / the moist air not released, this is where we can start to see corrosion on the bead of the tyre causing slow leaks! To rectify this, the bead needs to be cleaned back of the corrosion and a sealant applied.
