New Michelin Tyres for a Honda Civic Type-R

Following on from the FK2 platform, the 'new' FK8 Honda Civic Type-R has been critically acclaimed at being the ultimate track weapon. However, with its 306 BHP and FWD, the Honda can soon chew through some tyres if driven to the max. This customer recently called in as a full four tyre swap was needed in time for cruising down the beautiful spring roads.

With the tyres loaded onto the van, I headed out to the customer's location that afternoon. Upon arrival, we had a lengthy chat about the vehicle, the needs of the customer and any notes about his driving habits. With this in mind, I checked the tyre wear to ensure that the customer would be getting the best possible lifespan of the tyre but to also ensure their safety on the road. But, with more performance orientated vehicles, the camber will be slightly more negative compared to a standard road going vehicle. Whilst cornering, your tyres naturally create positive camber, but this results in the tyre having less contact with the road. To counter this, people decrease the camber to ensure the tyres have as much contact with the road whilst in a corner.

Despite the camber being technically out, it was correct for the vehicle. After the check, we jacked up the vehicle and set too removing the wheels from all corners of the car. These were then placed on our turn table ready for the worn tyre to be removed. We broke the bead, removed the old tyre and then refitted the tyre. These were then inflated to the correct working pressure. Before installing back onto the vehicle, we balanced the wheels!

Placing the wheels back onto the Honda was easy enough, this was followed by tightening the bolts to a snug fit and lowering the vehicle back onto the ground where we could torque the bolts to their correct setting.

That's it! We left the customer with a smile on his face and headed out into the big wide world. Although, as the tyres are on the verge of being a semi-slick, we advised the customer to keep a light right foot on the cold crisp mornings!
