Storm Christoph – Flood Warnings Across East Lancashire | Are Your Tyres Ready?
With high-alert weather warnings 'flooding' in across East Lancashire, we wanted to make sure our customers stayed safe throughout the coming storm. The warnings are place across the whole of Lancashire, including Lancaster, Preston, Lytham, Chorley, Blackburn, Clitheroe, Colne, Burnley and many others.
Although most people are safely working from home, there are still many people across East Lancashire heading to work in the bleak January weather.
One thing to remember when you're driving in bad conditions, is that your tyres are the ONLY thing keeping you connected to that slippery, wet and worsened road surface. Having ample tread is vital in keeping your grip and keeping your braking distances shorter.
Below is a graph showing stopping distances in DRY conditions, add a wet road surface and these numbers DOUBLE.
Sufficient tread depth could be the difference between a near miss and a nasty accident, tread on your tyres is the thing which allows your tyres to disperse water between the road surface and the contact point of the tyre. If the tread depth is low, the grooves aren't deep enough to disperse the volume of water they need to, resulting in the dreaded aquaplaning.
During an aquaplane, you will lose the ability to brake, steer and accelerate, which isn't a situation any motorist wants to find themselves in.
It's highly important to check your pressures an average of once a month, this is even more vital in the winter months. As well as causing a potential dangerous situation, this could result in a hefty fine of up to £2,500 and 3 points on your licence… per tyre!!
