Runflat Tyres for a BMW 1 Series in Accrington

We recently went out to a customer with a BMW 1 Series with run-flat tyres all round. Whilst washing his car, he noticed that the rear tyres were becoming extremely bald. Upon checking the fronts, he noticed that a couple of chords were starting to appear on the inside shoulder. Across the board, all four tyres needed to be replaced. As this was a higher performance 1 Series, the vehicle had a staggered off-set meaning that the rear tyres were larger than the fronts.

Understandably, the customer was anxious to change the tyres over to a fresh set. In this instance, the customer had opted to go for the same brand but the performance version, the Bridgestone S001. Although these tyres are performance orientated, they still have the runflat capability. Runflat tyres allow a user to drive whilst the tyre is deflating or has no air pressure inside. But, this is only to get to a safe location and will not last forever. Bridgestone tyres, for example, allow the user to drive 50 miles at a maximum speed of 50 miles per hour before the internal structure heats up too much and starts to deteriorate.

Upon arrival to the customer's location, we performed a free alignment check to ensure that the tyres were wearing evenly. Although the fronts were wearing a bit harder than usual on the inner side-wall, the alignment check showed that this was within specification and did not need to be adjusted. We proceeded to jack the vehicle up into the air, place it onto jackstands and then one by one, remove the wheels. This was popped onto the bead breaker in out van where would remove the old tyre and inspect the rim for any corrosion or damage. With the checks complete, we then installed the new 225/40R18 Bridgestone Runflat, inflated and balanced. The same process was used for all four tyres apart from the rears having the 245/35R18 Bridgestones installed.

After the swap over, the wheels were installed back onto the BMW, the nuts hand tightened

With the old tyre removed, we installed the new S001, inflated and re-balanced the wheel on our machine. This was then popped back onto the BMW, the nuts hand tightened and lowered back onto the floor. Whilst on the floor, we gave the vehicle a final check over and torqued the nuts to the correct setting.
