My Tyre Pressure is Going Up! | Hometyre Mobile Tyre Pressure Checks in Blackburn
To say that tyre pressures are a vital part of a cars
workings is a huge understatement! If your tyres are over-inflated, the tyres
will wear unevenly and provide less grip to the road surface. If
under-inflated, this will also result in uneven tyre wear. If your tyres are
severely underinflated, the wheel could start to cut through the sidewall,
which is not going to end well for your tyres!
As we are now in the midst of summer and its glorious heat,
checking your pressures has never been more important. Like checking your oil
and coolant, always check the pressures when its cold, ideally first thing in
the morning. If the pressures are above or below the manufactures recommend
setting, they need to be adjusted accordingly.
Nowadays, we are generally seeing cars running at 35/37 PSI but, the best way to check what yours should be at is either in the owner's manual, behind the fuel filler cap or on the door sill. There will be a few options as to what the pressure should be according to the weight the vehicle is carrying and which size tyres you have installed so follow the instructions accordingly!
Already, due to this heat, we are seeing a number of people reporting that their car's Tyre Pressure Monitoring System is flagging up indicating a pressure loss where in actual fact it's the opposite. The role of the TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) is to indicate when the sensor senses a change in pressure, not just a pressure loss. So, if you've encountered a warning on your dashboard indicating a pressure loss, check your tyres if safe to do so. If you've been driving and the tyres are now over-inflated, don't let them down! Wait till they have cooled, ideally overnight, then re-check and adjust if needed.
If you've reinflated or changed the pressures, it's always best to reset the TPMS system. Of which, you can follow this link!
