Having a car out of a alignment is one of the biggest contributing factors to unusual wear patterns and premature tyre wear. From wearing on the edges to increased fuel economy, having a front axle that is too far toed out or toed in is never a good thing and that’s why alignments are important!

This customer had called us to book an appointment specifically for having the tyres changed over as they were wearing on the edge and also for a front wheel alignment to help prevent excessive wear. Upon arrival we inspected all four tyres to understand the general condition and then proceeded with the swap over. After changing the tyres, inflating, and balancing we could then move the vehicle to a flat surface where we inserted metal discs underneath the front two wheels (to allow ease of movement during the side to side movement of the wheels) and start performing the alignment.

Laser gauges were hung from the front two wheels pointing towards the rears where measurement flags are hung. Through a series of calculations and referring to the manufactures recommended specification, we could adjust the track rods from underneath the car. The rods are loosened then rotated to move the laser to the correct position. Once adjusted on the one side, the other side is then adjusted in the same way to bring that side’s alignment into tolerance. In turn, this also moves the other side so ends up being a game of cat and mouse! Eventually both sides will become aligned but just takes time.

With the alignment completed, the customer was asked to give the vehicle a quick test drive to ensure everything was up to scratch for them! One thing to note is that over the course of two to three years, as the alignment starts to move out of orientation, these small micro adjustments won’t be noticeable to an individual and the brain becomes conditioned to the new norm. But, as soon as the wheels are brought back into the correct area, the driving experience is completely different. And this is exactly what the customer said!
