Handling issues on a Merc GLC AMG 63 in Nelson
Hometyre East Lancashire were called out to a regular fitting address on an industrial estate in Nelson, this particular customer had bought a new Mercedes-Benz AMG GL Class and had been having some issues with the handling at slow speed.
The Mercedes GLC AMG 63 was fitted with 21" rims, the client had specific issues with turning on full lock at extremely low speed. The supplying dealer suggested moving to winter tyres and supplied a brand new set of Pirelli Scorpion Winter tyres, front size 265/40R21 and the rear size 295/35R21 to see if this would rectify the problem.
We were called to install these and removed the Michelin Pilot sport 4S, once fitted we asked the customer to call us and let us know how they were getting on with their winters.
We heard from the customer a couple of days later and the issue seem better however Mercedes have extreme caster angles on their suspension which permits the car to turn tightly at slow speed.
The flip side of allowing the car to do this is that the tyre does not fully rotate when in a forward or rearward motion that means it effectively twists and as a consequence skips across the surface.
Winter tyres have generally a greater tyre gauge (or tread depth) and also have greater tread blocks, they are also made from different rubber compounds which are softer than their summer equivalents and thus tend to grip more.
