A Major Leap for Michelin Aiming for 100% Sustainable Tyres by 2050
On average, 1.6 billion car tyres are sold world wide each year resulting in circa 800,000 tonnes of PET fibres being used as
structural components within the tyre.
Michelins’ share of this tonnage is
reported to be equivalent to 3 billion standard plastic bottles! Using
an enzymatic process from Michelin’s new partner, Carbios, this process aims
at braking down these used PET materials to help Michelin create the world’s
first 100% sustainable tyre. Moving from the old thermomechanical process of braking down
tyres, the new enzymatic process will also create the same high quality virgin
PET materials resulting in no loss in quality!
We hope to see these tyres out and about on the road soon
and look forward to Michelin achieving their goal of 100% sustainable material
sourcing by 2050 which isn’t too far away!
