What Are Continental Seal Tyres? | Hometyre Mobile Self Sealing Tyre Repair

Having a flat tyre whilst out and about is one of the worst feelings. Whether you be in the middle of the countryside or stuck in the busy city centre, when you're immobile you feel completely vulnerable. Run-Flat tyres were developed in the 1970s with Goodyear in conjunction with Chrysler in which they created a tyre infused with a reinforced interlining to carry the weight of the vehicle.

Nowadays, Run-Flat tyres are still found on BMWs/MINI/Mercedes and some other premium cars. Some owners of these reinforced tyres have noted that they typically have a harsher ride and don't grip as well compared to standard tyres so often opt to change to normal tyres.

Continental have taken the benefits of a normal tyre and implemented the extended mobility aspect of the Run-Flat tyre by creating a lining of sealant in the tyre. If penetrated by an object smaller than 5mm, this sealant will coagulate around the object and prevent air from escaping.

But how do I tell if I have these on my car?

Typically, the larger Volkswagen SUVs (Passat, Tiguan & Touareg) and their comparable Skoda models have a high chance of having the seal-sealing tyres installed from the factory. But, how can I tell and where does it say? On the side of the tyre, in some of the largest letters, it should say ContiSeal™ or can just say seal!

By using one of these tyre, we would highly recommend using a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) to ensure that the puncture has been sealed and you can continue your journey to the outer wilds.

Unlike some companies, we can repair these types of tyres but do require longer so please call us first to check availability!
