What are Light Commercial Tyres and How Are They Different to Car Tyres? | Hometyre Mobile Van or Caravan Tyre Replacement in Kent
Like Apples and Oranges, tyres may be ‘tyres’ but not all
are the same. Whether it be down to size, brand or pattern, even the same
family of tyres can be completely different. The main difference between a
commercial tyre and a normal car tyre is the number of ply cords.
But how to I know if my tyre is designed for a light commercial vehicle?
This can be found on the side of the tyre usually just after the size you will see a C which stands for commercial.
Car tyres are designed for fuel efficiency, grip, water
displacement and noise reduction to name just a few factors. In comparison, due
to the nature of light commercial vehicles, noise and efficiency aren’t such
big factors.
The main differences are larger tread blocks, a harder
compound, and a squarer design.
Finally, there are the ply cords are the backbone of the tyres are they provide the rigidity and allow the tyre to be kept at a high pressure (which in turn helps with having a higher load). When taking the tyre size from the tyre, on a light commercial vehicle, the most critical part is that load rating, see below!
