How old are your Tyres? How to find out.

_1160x1160_20170622_085916_1_1

When tyres are made the manufacturer puts a lot of information on the sides of the tyre including the size, speed rating, load index, pressure ratings and the DOT code.

The DOT code includes a 4 digit number showing the week and year of manufacture. The date may only be shown on one side of the tyre so maybe on the inside out of sight.

From the example above the last four digits "5007" indicate the 50th week (50) of 2007 (07). Tyres made before 1999 have a 3 digit code and should not be used.

Tyre manufacturers recommend replacement of tyres after 5-7yrs or sooner if they show any signs of cracking or perishing regardless of remaining tread depth.

So if you're tyres show any signs of cracking or perishing or are older than 5yrs get them replaced regardless of remaining tread depth. Don't forget the spare.

Old or perished tyres are more likely to suffer punctures or blow outs!
