What Makes A Safe Puncture Repair? Mobile Puncture Repairs in Chester & The Wirral

We were called out recently to a customer in Chester for a puncture repair. When we arrived, we found the issue wasn't a new puncture but a previous puncture repair!

Why Did The Puncture Repair Fail?

The puncture repair was not carried out according to British Safety BSAU159 standards, which provides limits to the location, size and number of repairs on a single tyre as follows:

  • The puncture must have occurred in the central ¾ of the width of the tread.
  • The hole caused by the object cannot be more the 6mm.
  • Multiple repairs cannot be carried out within the same quarter of the tyre.

In this case the failure was down to the location of the attempted repair which was too close to the sidewall as seen in the image below:

So... Why Should This Area Be Unsafe For A Repair?

The sidewall is constructed differently than the main tread and is more integral for the structure of the tyre. In making a puncture repair we use an air drill to ream a while for the plug part of the repair patch and this would compromise the structure of the tyre. In addition the sidewall flexes significantly more and therefore a plug and patch located near it can dislodge as happened in this case.

Hometyre will always point out when a tyre puncture be safely repaired. Unfortunately in this case the job was not carried out correctly or the tyres may have been purchased part worn where an unsafe repair has been undertaken. For more information on safe puncture repair click here
