Part Worn Tyres, What are the Effects?
It is a common misconception that purchasing part-worn tyres are the better deal as it’s always cheaper upfront. Despite being cheaper, there lies an unknown history of abuse and neglect that could see you pay dearly for this later down the line.
Over the life of a part-worn tyre, it’s actually cheaper to
purchase a brand-new tyre compared to multiple part worns. The average
part-worn tyre has a tread of 4mm whilst some supply tyres with as little as
2mm. In the part worn industry, Trading Standards requires this to be the limit
of what is sold to the public. But think for a second, this is only 0.4 of a mm
away from being an illegal tyre to which you’ll need to replace these anyway
sooner rather than later!
In addition, from research conducted by TyreSavings.com, the
average part-worn tyre will cost you £6.25 per mm of tread whilst a new tyre
will cost on average £5 per mm of tread.
What happens if the part-worn tyre you purchased has plenty of
tread? Well, think of the flip side, even if it looks new there is probably a
reason as to why it’s been sold as a part worn. It could be damaged or, more
likely, it’s an incredibly old tyre. Despite having no law against selling old
tyres, selling a tyre that is cracking and brittle from age is incredibly
dangerous as if heated too quickly could cause the tyre to burst from lack of
elasticity (the elastic chemicals in the tyre evaporate over time. This is
compounded by Ultraviolet sun damage.)
We recently attended a customer’s prized Ford Capri who was
sold part-worn tyres under the premise of having brand new tread. Upon
inspection of the tyres, the dot code showed they were just over 30 years old.
Our mind-set for customers is safety first, that is why we
