Can I Use Car Tyres for My Caravan? | Hometyre Caravan Tyre Replacement Service
The darkened nights are soon brightening up with the sun setting behind the hills later and later. But, the cold mornings still plague the lowlands. However, this isn’t deterring caravaners for preparing for the spring season as we are already inundated with bookings for swapping tyres on single, twin axle and motorhomes. These types of vehicles require more specialist tyres compared to that of a car. As they carry more weight, caravans and motorhomes require a commercially designated tyre compromised of either a C or CP on the side of the tyre. For example, on a caravan you might see 185R14C on a caravan or 215/70R15CP on a motorhome.
But how are these different to a normal car tyre?
The short answer is the ply rating and maximum weight. The most popular caravan size is 185/80R14 (Often seen as 185R14) followed by 102/100. On a normal caravan, you will always look at the larger number. For split wheeled vans (those with four wheels on the same axle) you will use the slightly lower rating. Diversion aside, the 102 represents a maximum weight of 850kg per tyre. Compared to a car tyre in that size running on 91’s the 102 is an increase of 235 kg; half a tonne on a single axle caravan and nearly a tonne on a twin axle.
