Porsche TPMS Issue Resolved in Bristol!

So a customer with a Porsche Cayenne calls when they have a TPMS alert appearing one morning, Prior to the call, they'd visited a petrol station and checked the pressures - only to find that they were all good. At this point they suspected a tyre pressure sensor malfunction and wanted to switch off the warning.

Comment: We can tell you that this was absolutely not because of a tyre pressure sensor malfunction! The Porsche TPMS system is one of the most sensitive systems on the market. All the tpms systems are set to an ideal air pressure with a margin of air loss preset in order to create an alert.

For example, let's say the tyre size is 275/45R19 and the air pressure should be 39 psi for the rear tyres and 35 psi for the front tyres. When the tyre pressure deviates from just 39 psi to 36 psi system, the car will alert the driver!. In most other vehicle tpms systems this margin is a fair bit larger - in which case the tpms system will alert only when the air pressure falls from 39 psi to 32 psi, for instance.

Porsche owners often face the problem of false pressure alerts!

And this is often why:

It's all down to air temperature folks - well mostly it is! It's fair to say that most Porsche vehicle have pretty large tyres. From a cold start tyre pressures can increase considerably during usage (heat and expansion and all that!). Owners often check pressures and reset the system during the day when temperatures are higher and the vehicle has been in use. Of course this is compounded further in the winter months!

As the tyre cools, the temperature and therefore pressure reduces, and the car 'detects' a loss! Maybe slightly over sensitive parameters for Northern European countries for these cars!

Never rule out a puncture or other air loss though - that's always the first place to start and for this you're in luck!
