Caravan Tyre Fitting and Tyron Band Removal in Portishead

Caravan season is nearly upon us! Many people, including myself, will be heading out to their favourite holiday location. But, before heading out, we encourage you to check the age and wear of your tyres! Older tyres have a higher chance of 'popping' when traveling at high speeds. This customer had noticed that their tyres were about to turn eight years old so decided that it was imperative to change them to new tyres.

Upon arriving at the customer's house in Portishead, we talked to the customer to explain what we would be doing and if they had any questions. The caravan was then jacked up on both sides and placed on jack-stands. 

The wheels were then removed and placed onto our bench where we could remove the tyre. We broke the bead and noticed that, on this occasion, the wheels were fitted with Tyron bands. Fortunately, all of the technicians, including myself, are trained in removing and re-fitting Tyron bands.

But what are Tyron Bands? Well, the jist of it is that if you encounter a blowout on the motorway, whether it be a car, van or caravan, the band will stop the tyre from coming completely off the wheel. Yes, it will deflate but, the bead wont become 'unsettled' and possibly cause the vehicle to flip/tip over. You can learn more about Tyron Bands here.

The bead was slowly taken off the rim and the band unclipped. This was set to one side for inspection. After the all clear, the band was re-fitted to the wheel and the fresh new 195/70 R15 Hankook installed carefully. Installing tyres where Tyron bands have been installed is quite tricky and does take a bit more time. With the installation complete, the wheels were balanced and taken back to the caravan. The nuts were then tightened to the correct torque specification in a gradual star pattern!
