Van tyres and a VOSA check
Got a call from a new customer today who runs a waste disposal company.
One of his vans had been stopped by VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) for being overloaded. They then decided to check his vehicle and found that 2 of his tyres where illegal. This means they impounded the vehicle and it cannot move until the problem has been rectified. He called us to see if we could do the tyres on the van, no problems, tyres loaded and off we went to the van to replace the tyres.
Then it gets worse for him, he calls one of his other vans to remove some of the load on the first van so once the tyres have been replaced they can carry on, the second van turns up and VOSA decide to check this van as well, they then discover that this van has 1 illgal tyre on it and that van is also impounded.
Luckily we had another van in the area that picked up a tyre for the second van and headed off to do that tyre.
Both van fixed and off to work they went, but also nursing a big fine.
He has now asked us to do regular checks on his vans so that if they gets stopped again VOSA wont find tyre problems.

Locking wheel nut in Watford
Just been to do a locking wheel nut in
The car was at a Tyre Depot and the locking wheel nut key had been damaged by being used with an air gun. Locking wheel nuts should never be used with an air gun as they tighten the nuts up to much, we always hand tighten ALL the nuts on a car by hand using a torque wrench set to the manufacturers recommended torque setting.
We managed to remove the locking wheel nut but it took time and cost the customer (he will be reimbursed by the tyre depot) money to have it removed. He also missed an important meeting he had been going to, next time he is going to use our service so he can be at his meeting while we are changing his tyre. Also he will then know that the wheel nuts have been correctly torqued.
Just think, you could be stuck at the side of the road with a locking wheel nut that won’t come off all because it was incorrectly fitted.

BMW 3 series with a flat tyre in Muswell Hill N10. Cracked rim
Attended a BMW 325 with a flat tyre this morning. The tyre wall had been damaged by the car going into a pothole.
I took the tyre off and discovered that the wheel rim had a crack in it that was to big to repair. We do know people that can weld a cracked rim but it depends on how damaged the rim is before repair.
This means that I cannot fit the new tyre to the car until he has purchased a replacement wheel. Put the old tyre back on the damaged wheel and refitted the wheel to the car. The car cannot be driven until the new tyre is fitted.
He is now looking on EBay for a replacement wheel but if he has no luck then it will be the main dealer or an aftermarket option, neither will be cheap.
Try and keep away from potholes especially if you have low profile tyres as these are more susceptible to damage in potholes.
BMW X5 tyres Bridgestone 275/40/20 W in Whetsone
Have just attended a BMW X5 that has Bridgestone 275/40/20 tyres on it. The front tyre was damaged due to the car hitting a kerb and damaging the side wall.
Changed the tyre and checked the tracking (allignment) to make sure that the knock had not put his tracking out. Everything was OK.
All the other tyres where fine with a minimum tread depth of 6 mm. Checked the tyre pressures as well.
Porsche 911 corroded wheel bolt
Did a set of tyres on a Porsche 911 last week and noticed that the wheel bolt had corroded badly. Advised the customer to get a replacment set. Refitted the wheel and the customer ordered the new bolts. Once they arrived I went back to remove the corroded bolts and fit his new bolts. Torqued the new bolts to the correct torque as per the manafactures spec.
Below is a picture of the corroded bolts, if your 911 bolts look like this order some new ones and replace the old one.
Illegal tread depth on a car in Norht London
Went to a job today for 4 tyres on a Nissan Micra. The customer had ordered 4 tyres.
Turned up and took the tyres off and each tyre had an illegal tread depth. If the police had pulled him over he would have been liable for 3 point and up to £2500 per tyre, yes that is per tyre. So that is 12 point on the licence and a possible £10,000 fine.
To stay legal you must have. 1.6mm through a continuous band covering the center 3/4 of the tyres around the entire circumference.
Keep an eye on your tyres, once the tread depth drops below 3mm the grip that the tyre offers starts to drop off. If you need to stop quickly it will take you longer to stop the nearer 1.6 your tyres get. This could be the difference between hitting somebody and stopping in time.
Your tyres are the only thing keeping you in contact with the road, remember tread depth is there for a reason.
Tyre change in Watford on a Ford Focus 205/55/R16
Went to a customer this morning in Watford who needed a budget 205/55/R16 tyre.
The appointment had to be early as he needed the car to take his children to school.
Turned up at 07.30 as requested, removed the wheel from the car, removed the tyre from the wheel, fitted the new tyre and balanced the wheel, put the wheel back on the car and torqued the wheel nuts up to the correct torque as per the manafactures specification.
Also checked his other tyres and noticed that he had a nail in 1 tyre. All the other tyres had 5mm of tread left so they where ok. The spare was a couple of pounds down on pressure so I topped that up as well.
The nail in the tyre had caused a puncture so I fixed the puncture for him and finished the whole job in 45mins.
Customer was very happy with our mobile tyre service and took a handful of leaflets to tell all his friends.
So if you need a tyre changed at a time that suits you call Hometyre and that is what we will do.
Locking wheel nut removal in Watford followed by a puncture repair.
Attended a Ford Fiesta today that had a flat tyre that needed to be repaired. The owner had just brought the car and could not find the locking wheel nut. He had searched the car from top to bottom but could not find it.
We carry special equipment to remove locking wheel nuts, removed all 4 locking wheel nuts and repaired the tyre. Then refitted the wheel and put a new locking wheel nut on each wheel that the customer had already brought.
Checked the tyre pressures on all the remaining tyres (only a couple of pounds out but now correct) and checked the tread depth on all the tyres. Did not have to check the spare as he did not have one, just a repair kit. Put the locking wheel nut key in the boot where the original one should have been and put this information on the customers invoice so he will know where it it next time.
So if you are buying a car check that the locking wheel nut key is in the car and that you know where it is.

Puncture repair on a Ford Focus in Enfield and Bulge in a tyre
Attended a puncture in Enfield. The tyre had a nail in the middle of the tyre and had not been driven on so was repairable.
I checked the other tyres on the car at the same time and found a bulge on one of the rear tyres, this had been caused by the customer hitting a pothole that had damaged the side wall. This cannot be repaired so I had to replace the tyre. Luckily she had not damaged her wheel but we always check to see if a wheel has been cracked.
The spare tyre was also down on pressure so I pumped this up, remember that all your tyres slowly lose pressure so you should check your spare at the same time as you check the pressures in your other tyres.
Job took 30 minutes and the customer was happy as she did not have to leave the house with her young children.

Performing a car park check on a Fleet of vans
I was called today to a local company that run a fleet of 10 vans delivering in the local area. They wanted a check on all the Vans to ensure that they are all legal as one of there drivers had a blow out while out delivering, luckily he did not crash or hit anybody.
Turned up early and found that 4 of the vans had either illegal/defective tyres.
I pointed out the faults which ranged from puntures causing the tyre to lose pressure, incorrect tyres being fitted (passanger car tyres fitted instread of commercial tyres), bald tyres, they also has couple of missing spare wheels.
I also checked the staffs personal cars and found a mixture of nails in tyres, bulges in the side walls and again tyres with illegal tread depth.
All these faults have now been rectified and all the tyres have been set to the correct tyre pressures, and as they said 'at a very good privce without the inconvience of having to leave base'

Caravan tyres and Tyron bands
Had my first Caravan job of the year today (very early), couple are off to Spain for a month (via France).
Tyres had baldly cracked due to lack of use, they had been on the caravan for 5 year from new. They did not want to have to take the Caravan to the local tyre depot so they called us as we go to the customer.
Changed the tyres and fitted Tyron bands at the same time.
Tyron bands keep the tyre on the wheel giving you more control if you have a blow out, helping you to stay in control and pull over when it is safe.

Thousands of motorists are driving death-trap cars because they are choosing cheaper second-hand tyres.
Thousands of motorists are driving potential death-traps because they have bought part-worn tyres.
More than four million second-hand tyres were sold last year, but many are unfit for the road, an investigation has discovered.
Researchers found rust nails embedded in the rubber, botched repairs and hidden patches.
With new tyres costing up to £1,000 for four, cash-strapped motorists have been seeking ways to cut costs.
That has seen the development of a thriving black market in illegal and, in some cases, lethal, second-hand-tyres.
The problem with locking wheel nuts
Went to a new customer today who could not get his locking wheel nuts off. His locking wheel nut key was damaged after the wheel had been 'gunned on' by another company, this had caused his key to snap. The first thing he new about it was when he tried to put his spare on after a puncture. We got his locking wheel nuts off and fixed his puncture, the wheel was then replaced and tightened the nuts to the Vehicle manufactures torque specification by hand. Next time your are at a tyre depot check that the locking wheel nut has not been 'gunned on' or this situation could affect you, or you could just come to the Professionals and have it done correctly first time.
