Hot weather and your tyres
July 2013 has seen heat records smashed across the UK as a result of a longer period of prolonged high temperatures for a considerable number of years.
Why you should consider your tyres!
Tyres are constructed using mostly a natural product - rubber. From the date of manufacture, rubber naturally ages and deteriorates. From new the product is in its most durable and elastic state. Even without use, over a number of years rubber will harden and perish.
Your tyres may have already covered many thousands of miles and have remained mounted to your wheels for a number of years too. The stresses and strains your tyres are put through each and every time you drive are significant. Couple this wilth the effects of low level ozone and ultra violet light year round as well as crater like potholes and kerb impacts to contend with, your tyres may already be close to breaking point. Unfortunately, often the only real indicator of a tyres current suitability is determined by its failure.
Hot, sunny weather often gives us drivers a sense of security on the roads. Grip naturally improves and cornering speeds tend to rise. Our safety - and that of other road users - is wholly reliant on the ability and condition of our tyres to perform. High ambient temperatures, hot road surfaces and higher speeds result in higher tyre pressures (air expands in heat!).
Notice how many more cars, vans and caravans you'll be seeing on dual carriageways, motorways and A/B roads on hot days? Older tyres already strained and more brittle are unable to deflect foreign objects or absorb them without failing in dramatic fashion. Strips of rubber and steel are often found spread across the road where the tyre has simply been unable to contain the air pressure within and consequently tears apart.
Motorists can avoid the dangers and hassle of roadside blow outs by checking the age and condition of tyres before use. Check out our "How to check your Tyres" page for more info.

Kevlar vs Steel belted Tyres?
Pirelli F1™ Tyres
This years F1™ British Grand Prix at Silverstone created serious concerns with regards the construction and suitability of the tyres supplied by global manufacturer Pirelli from race teams and drivers alike.
Following five successive rear left tyre blow outs over the course of the race weekend, Pirelli came under serious scrutiny with drivers even threatening a boycott of the then forthcoming German Grand Prix.
With no clear or specific indication of the tyres actual failing, it appeared that a number of factors contributed to the eventual total de-lamination of the same tyre on each car.
Excessive loading and repeated damage caused by a raised kerb block appeared to be the key issues.
In response, Pirelli swiftly altered the construction of the tyres from steel belted to Kevlar just in time for the next race. With no further incidents - this certainly appears to have corrected the problem as well as allaying the safety fears of the 200mph drivers.
So what is the difference?
Kevlar vs Steel Tyres
Kevlar was created somewhat by accident in 1964 by a Polymer chemist. In anticipation of a petroleum shortage, a team were searching for a new lightweight high strength fibre to use within tyre construction when they stumbled upon a new and seemingly unbreakable fibre.
The first commercial use of the now widely known synthetic fibre was actually for racing tyres during the 1970s.
With properties such as tensile strength matching that of steel, Kevlar is the ideal alternative where weight has search an influence on the performance of the product. In fact it is five times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis!
For F1™, Pirelli were instructed to provide tyres that further enhanced the entertainment value of the sport for the spectator - without compromising on safety. The steel belted tyre construction, following the first half of the season and certainly since Silverstone, was already due to switch to Kevlar but this was brought forward accordingly.
Kevlar in Passenger car tyres
Despite the obvious quality difference of the polymer fibre, Kevlar is not used as a replacement for steel in mass produced passenger car tyres. The cost of production is considerably higher and would make the end product cost prohibitive for the consumer.

How Green is Blue?
After years of persuasion to 'go green' and protect the environment, that message appears to now be an integral part of our lifestyle and purchasing processes.
The emphasis now is all about blue!
Blue is the globally recognised colour for efficiency and this has become an important factor in the development, production and subsequent consumer decision making process concerning tyres.
New EU tyre labelling -Similar to the efficiency ratings you find on washing machines and refridgerators - new EU tyre labels now provide information relating to fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise emissions.
Tyre manufacturers are now concentrating efforts on creating the best performing tyres in respect of these key measurements. With fuel prices reaching unparalleled highs, we as consumers are demanding more for our money - without compromising on safety.
Already, the worlds largest tyre manufacturers have rolled out new products that have superb performance characteristics - such as the DUNLOP BLURESPONSE 205/55VR16 passenger car tyre as an example below. All three performance measurements are very much in the 'green' having scored an overall B for rolling resistance (Fuel efficiency) - A for wet braking - and a low 68dB external noise emission output as shown below.
BLUE is very much the new green when it comes to tyres! Hometyre supply a huge range of new tyres, fitted by our team of mobile tyre fitters across the UK. Our online shop provides you with all the necessary labelling information and keen prices to make the most informed decision about your new tyres.

Where Have Spare Tyres Gone??
Years ago all new cars came with a spare tyre and jack kit. While this may have been a cause for much confusion and concern for the poor motorist stranded at the roadside with a puncture or a blowout - at least the ability to get rolling was always there with a little effort and blackened hands.
Modern car manufacturers are tasked with seeking ever reducing carbon emissions through whatever means necessary. One of these is through vehicle weight reduction.
The spare wheel and tyre has become the victim.
In it's place in the boot you'll often find a can of temporary sealant which is pumped into the tyre via the valve.
While this may offer a very limited 'get you home' capability, the reality is that these products seldom fix anything more than a small puncture within the tread of the tyre - which may have lost pressure overnight. A sudden deflation or blowout from a sidewall impact while driving will likely render a spare-less vehicle stranded at the roadside with no means of repair.
For motoring breakdown organisations this trend is causing a permanent headache both day and night. For motorists, the experience can be immensely stressful and sometimes quite dangerous what with having to remove passengers from cars to await rescue in often precarious positions - and that's for those lucky enough to have a mobile phone signal!
What's the answer?
Run on flat tyres were introduced a number of years ago to provide a safer solution in the event of a puncture. These tyres are capable of being driven on for a limited mileage at a limited speed with zero pressure held within. They are self supporting as a result of the improved and significantly reinforced sidewall construction. They are also considerably more expensive and are rapidly falling out of favour with many cash strapped motorists.
The reality is that vehicles should always carry a spare wheel and tyre - be it a space saver or full size item - and a removal kit. To go one step further, perhaps all new drivers should also be trained and tested on their ability to replace a wheel should the need arise - valuable knowledge for everyone.
If the current situation has arisen due to global government policies to reduce carbon output from vehicles then perhaps a study should be undertaken to calculate the additional emissions pumped out from the 100's of millions of recovery miles undertaken each year as a direct result.
New vehicles should always carry a spare wheel and purchasers need to bring about change by continuing to demand this feature as a standard option.

Pirelli Tyres add to the F1™ drama
Changes to the construction of tyres for F1™ this season have made for some dramatic looking tyre failures during the first few races.
The reason for the apparent failures have been explained by Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery. The Italian tyre giant have introduced a new high tensile steel belt underneath the tyre tread to make it increasingly difficult for debris to cause punctures.
When the tyre is hit by debris, the tread is now the weakest component and can overheat and delaminate. While this appears very dramatic, actually the tyre structure is still very much intact and can be driven back to the pits. Previous tyre designs would have failed completely and often signalling the end of a race for the unlucky recipient.
Road going motorists need not be concerned with buying Pirelli tyres though! The brand remains one of the most reputable and well known in the world!
Summer vs All Season tyres in the UK?
What's your experiences - we'd like to know!
We're all long-suffering recipients of cold wet weather here in the UK. The trend towards winter tyres is certainly growing along with the awareness of the benefits. It could be argued that our climate could potentially allow for the use of cold weather tyres year round. While these products offer the best benefits below 7C, they also dramatically improve wet braking abilities in all temperatures.
The only downside to year-round use of winter type tyres is a small reduction in fuel economy. this is as a direct result of the incredible traction and adherence to road surfaces.
Therefore perhaps the all season tyre will offer UK motorists the best protection year round? Summer tyres provide optimum driving 'feel' and response during summer months but dramatically lose grip and braking ability as the temperatures lower.
What are your thoughts?

Spring finally gives cause for tyre changing!
At last, the met office have given us all reason to be cheerful. With temperatures set to rise as the Gulf stream moves north up over Northern Europe and the UK, we can finally recommend that motorists should now consider swapping from cold weather tyres back to summer tyres.
Cold weather tyres work best below 7C to provide additional traction, braking and cornering grip. Above these temperatures summer and all season tyres will provide the most efficient motoring.
Our mobile fleet are ready to return to your home or work address to restore your vehicle to its spring and summer tyre set up!

Spring Tyre Season 2013
As February looms and the last few weeks of cold weather have been replaced with the more traditional milder and wetter weather - we're already starting to supply and fit tyres and Tyron bands to caravans and motorhomes in preparation of the forthcoming season!
Has your caravan been stored for the winter? Are your caravan tyres five years or older? With the covers coming off and the advance spring cleans starting to happen, don't forget to be extra vigilant with your tyres.
Prolonged standing can cause a tyre to misshape and often require considerable miles to warm up and reform. Also, exposure to the sunlight can lead to cracking and perishing of the sidewalls and tread areas. Don't ruin your holiday this year as a result of a blown out tyre. This can be both time consuming and costly in terms of further damage to your vehicle.
Tyron bands are a great safety feature for any caravan or motorhome alike. Preventing the tyre from being able to leave the wheel in the event of a deflation these mechanical devices are fitted into the wheel and have saved countless lives and vehicles in over thirty years of use. Originally designed for military use, Tyron bands can be fitted to almost any vehicle but are especially useful on caravans and motorhomes where tyres are often a considerable distance from the driver.
Hometyre technicians bring the entire fitting centre directly to your door - at home or the storage facility to replace/repair tyres and fit Tyron bands. Call us for more information now or to book in. 0333 444 54 54

Goodyear Launch New Winter Tyre
Goodyear tyres have launched the UltraGrip 8 High Performance winter tyre on the European market recently. Building on consumer concerns over vehicle control in the snow, Goodyear developed the new tyre to deliver a solid performance on snow, slush and on icy roads too.
Goodyear describe the tyre: "On wet roads, a directional design with Hydro-Dynamic Grooves disperses water sideways to enable effective aquaplaning resistance - while on dry a continuous centre rib contributes to more precise steering and maneouvering. Independent test results confirmed that, of the tyres tested, UltraGrip 8 Performance has the best handling performance on wet roads and also offers some of the lowest rolling resistance results."
