Caravan season starts

Have already had my first Caravan needing tyres, and today I fitted Tyron bands to another. Caravans are on the move on the roads, so If you need tyres give Hometyre a call, as we come to you - saving you the trouble of hitching your Caravan up and taking it to a garage.

Caravan tyre care

Many Caravan owners are now preparing their caravans for this season on the road. One of the most vital aspects of your caravan are the tyres, these need to be inspected regularly. Winter storage can sometimes have a detrimental effect on Motor caravan and trailer caravan tyres, so owners are advised to carry out simple checks to ensure their safety and the safety of their passengers: Carefully examine tyres to ensure that there are no cuts or bulges and that the sidewalls are sound and not affected by ozone cracking. By law, tyres must have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread although we recommend that tyres with less than 2.5mm of tread should be considered for replacement. Owners of trailer caravans with tyres that are over 7 years old should have them replaced irrespective of their condition. The Caravan club recommend changing the tyres after 5 to 7 years. Tyre pressures are vital and should be checked and adjusted in accordance with the manufacturer’s handbook. Finally, check your wheel nuts are tightened correctly, preferably using a torque wrench using the settings recommended in your manual. Happy Caravanning.

Can a puncture be repaired?

In most cases the answer is yes. There are a number of points that need to be checked by your qualified technician, namely:

That the puncture is in the centre 3/4 of the tread area.

The tyre has not been driven on and suffered side wall damage.

The hole is not too large or split.

That it will not overlap a previous puncture repair.

The technician should also check the amount of tread left, as it is not economically viable to repair a tyre that only has a minimum amount of tread left.

If in doubt, call hometyre and we can check the tyre for you.... and advise as to the best possible action.

Save Fuel

PUMP IT UP. Tyre inflation is one of the main determinants of a car's fuel economy. So,by making sure the tyres of your car are consistently inflated to the correct pressure (performing weekly checks will help with this), your tank of petrol will last longer and consequently you'll decrease the amount of CO2 your car releases into the atmosphere.

GET ON TRACK. Having your cars wheels aligned correctly can, save you both on fuel and tyre wear.

TYRE SAVERS Some manufacturers are now producing tyres that increase fuel consumption, by creating less rolling friction. So next time you change tyres ask about fuel saver tyres.

6 Tips to save you fuel

GET FRIENDLY WITH YOUR GARAGE. While getting your car serviced can seem like an annoying expense having it looked at regularly (exactly how often will depend on the number of miles you drive) will help to make sure its in tip top condition, improving the longevity of parts such as tyres and exhausts, reducing the likelihood of breakdowns and optimising fuel consumption.

PLAN AHEAD. Where possible you should plan your journeys to avoid busy, congested times as the less traffic on the road, the less fuel you'll burn stopping and starting, braking and crawling in traffic jams. As a result of journey planning you should also spend less time travelling which will again reduce fuel consumption - good for mother nature and your wallet.

CRUISE ALONG. Use cruise control wherever possible as this helps to keep your acceloration even and minimises fuel burning speed fluctuations that human drivers cause.

LOSE SOME WEIGHT. Emptying your boot and removing your roof rack whenever its not in use will help your fuel consumption no end for the simple reason that your car will be lighter to move around.

FILL IT UP. Next time you take a trip to the petrol station watch how you fill up. Fuel economy-wise its much better to run your tank right down before you top it up as fuel evaporates each time you remove the petrol cap so obviously the less you can do that the less fuel is lost to the atmosphere. Its also better to stop at the first click as if you continue filling beyond this there is a possibility that you'll simply loose the excess fuel as you begin to drive.

So, by following these tips and practicing eco-safe driving you can make your car much more environmentally and wallet friendly.

Parking in Brighton could get worse.

Unlawfully parked vehicles could be towed to a free parking bay street near you after the closure of a car pound. Cars left unlawfully in Brighton and Hove are now being moved to the nearest available free parking space rather than a secure lock-up. They will be left on the road unclamped and a parking notice will be fixed to the vehicle. Motorists will then have to call either the council or the police to try and locate their car.

The change in policy has come after Brighton and Hove City Council closed part of its operation at its car pound for a one month trial.

Helping The Chestnut Tree House Children's hospice

Roadworks on the A257 in Felpham

Road works with traffic lights have popped up on the A259 (Bognor to Littlehampton Road), near to the Summerley Lane junction. This is already causing delays, and its not even rush hour yet.

Tyre pressures

According to Auto trader magazine: Around three quarters of British motorists have under-inflated tyres - make sure you're not one of them. Ideally you should be checking your tyre pressures once a month, remember that correct tyre presures will give you better grip.

Trailer problems.

Not sure what is going on, but have seen 3 trailers by the sides of the roads this week. Two with punctures and one with no hub. National trailer breakdown week???
