Unbalanced Run Flat Tyres Causes a Mellor Client the Shakes

A regular customer in nearby Mellor Nr Blackburn called to ask if I would check the balancing on the car his partner had just bought. They said it was badly vibrating on the motorways.

When I had arrived I obviously did a routine check of all the tyres. The car had runflat Goodyear and Pirelli on the front, with slight wear on the off side front Which indicates the wheel alignment needs to be checked also.

When I had got to the rear tyres the garage that sold the car had replaced both tyres. Which is good thing, but the problem was that they had replaced them with standard non runflats. After informing the customer of this issue he contacted the garage straight away. They said it was a genuine mistake. The other issue of bad vibrating was that the new tyres had not been balanced when fitted.

If a vehicle in this case a BMW 1 series cabriolet is fitted with runflat tyres from the manufacturer, it will have no spare. The tyres are made so that if you had a puncture etc you are able to drive on the flat tyre for around 50 miles to get you to a safe place.

Two new 225/45/17  Goodyear Efficient grip[runflats] have been ordered and the wheel alignment to be checked at the same time.

Pot luck with potholes !!

A customer in near by Brock-hall Village hit a huge pothole and subsequently had damaged the nearside front tyre on his Range Rover. These vehicles are built to go off roads etc, so it was quite a shock to find the amount of damage to not one but both front tyres.

At a cost of around £200+ it was hardly surprising the owner was not happy. Luckily he had Hometyre East Lancs number who was able to source and replace the tyres the same day.

The vehicle had no spare so was very happy that we are a mobile tyre fitting service which covers the whole the east Lancaster district. The state of the roads in this region are quite shocking with a huge number of complaints regarding tyre and vehicle damage.

We are a fully equipped mobile tyre fitting service that not supply and fit tyres but also can repair punctures [where possible]. We can do on site full four wheel laser tracking, locking wheel nut removal and we supply and fit tyron bands for caravans etc.

The Range Rover had two new Continental cross contact 275/ 45/20 fitted, thankfully no damage was found on the the alloys.

Tyre data when needed.

Everyone is rushing around getting ready for holidays/trips away. Its a exciting time, especially for children. No matter how much planning goes into every eventuality.

Your vehicle often gets overlooked, tyres and having the correct pressure with the extra load [luggage] no jokes about mother in laws, are essential.

Having a puncture or even worse a blow out can not only be a disaster but potentially very dangerous and frighting. If unfortunately this does happen most vehicles don't have spares anymore. The only way around this depending where you are is to call your emergency cover IE breakdown provider to come and rescue you.

Hometyre does not cover emergency cover foe such instances, but where we can we will endeavour to help and assist where possible.  This is where we need all the information such as is the tyre repairable and the tyre size. A lot of drivers do not know how to find this information. The tyre info /data is on the sidewall of tyre normally in bold lettering, if this is not the case in smaller letters numbers. it usually looks like 205/55/16 91V .

Hometyre have specialised mobile technicians spread around the UK. We come to you whether its at home or your place of work. In some cases emergency call outs are unavoidable.

If you are planning in travelling or just want piece of mind we offer free tyre safety checks, call 0333 444 5454

Summer sun,and fun for ducks!!!!!!

Summer is here, honest! With all this rain we are getting at the moment its hard to believe summer holidays are just a couple of weeks away. But if you are planning on trips away or just weekend breaks in your caravan or motorhome, its a good time to check the tyres.

The things you need to be looking out for are signs of cracking, bulges etc. The caravan club as we do recommend that the tyres be replaced every 5-7 years,or sooner if any defects appear. Make sure the tyre is inflated to the correct pressure, check your handbook for this.

We cant stress enough about the replacing the tyres if any the symptoms appear. Not only is it a risk to you and your loved ones but a very costly one if anything was to happen to your pride and joy.

For caravans and motorhomes we recommend fitting tyron bands as precaution ,they keep the tyre on the rim if a puncture or a blow out occurs. This an stop serious damage and even save your lives.

For any help or advice please call 0333 444 5454

Summer (?) has arrived. Are you rubber ready?

Summer is here,are you ready?

Summer has finally arrived and so far we are getting a good share of sunshine too. But has always with the good old British weather we still are likely to get a few downpours.

Noticeably just last week we had two days of thunderstorms in East Lancashire area, which came with a lot of flooding in and around Burnley and Pendle areas.

Even with good tyres with plenty of tread sometimes the amount of water on the roads is going to catch people out. Aquaplaning is a frighting experience especially when you least expect it.

One of our dedicated members of the Hometyre head office team had such an experience. She escaped unscathed (thankfully) but her poor car was a complete right off. All you can do to minimise this happening is making sure your tyres are in good order and drive accordingly to the conditions.

For any expert advise on your tyres please call on mobile friendly 0333 444 5454. Saving you time ,money and ultimately lives.

TPMS or not TPMS

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), will soon be fitted to just about every vehicle coming off the production line, there will be some huge benefits to this change, TPMS systems alert the driver when one of the tyres has an issue, for example a puncture or if the tyre simply needs topping up with air. Giving the driver time to rectify the problem before it becomes worse and ends up being potentially dangerous or very expensive to fix!

TPMS systems come in different sizes but all do the same job. The downside to the TPMS system is if any faults occur or damages to them arise a specialised tool is required to reprogramme them, this will result in an MOT failure. Hometyre East Lancashire is fully equipped and able to replace or reprogramme the TPMS system. As the systems age, as with anything else, faults will become more of an issue.

Hometyre East Lancs covers the whole BB postcode area and is a friendly mobile tyre fitting service which will be able to assist with every tyre related need you might have, whether its a tyre replacement, puncture repair, locking wheel nut removal, laser wheel alignment and many more!

A huge bonus to our service is that we come to you, either at your home or work address, saving you both time and money due to taking almost no time out of your busy schedule!

Cost of not checking your tyre pressure.

After doing three FREE tyre and pressure safety checks in the last 7 days, a total of 19 vehicles, not one tyre had the correct pressure.

On a number of vehicles the lack of pressure had resulted in tyres having uneven wear on both sides to a degree that the damage was so great the tyres needed to be replaced.

With the correct pressure the tyres should have lasted for a few thousand miles, not only is it expensive to replace your tyres early, it also affects the vehicles fuel consumption. We all know extra visits to the petrol station is an unwanted and expensive trip in itself but more importantly is the effect on the car itself, its handling can be affected dramatically.

So the tyre and pressure checks done at offices in Burnley, Accrington and Blackburn all for free was a welcome relief. Not only on the purse strings but they were time saving too. For friendly free advice or just a simple tyre and pressure check, please call our mobile friendly number 0333 444 5454.

Caravan season is almost here, are you ready?

It may only be the first week of March but at Hometyre we are already receiving plenty of enquiries from both new and existing customers regarding caravan/motorhome tyres from all of those owners out there gearing up for the summer months. Easter Bank Holiday weekend is coming around fast, falling early this year with Good Friday on 25th March, this weekend often marks the start of the new season for many caravan owners.

Mobile tyre fitting is particularly handy for caravan/motorhome owners, with the ease of having Hometyre come out to your home the hassle of manoeuvring a large vehicle to a static site to have your tyres checked can be eliminated. The Caravan Club state the importance of checking the date of manufacture of your tyres, once the tyre reaches 5 years in age cracks begin to appear on the sidewall. Even if your caravan tyres appear to have sufficient tread they may still be unsafe, for more information on checking your tyres please click here.

Winter tyres check

Spring is almost upon us, but the weather keeps throwing us a curve ball. Here in the East Lancashire region we have had a couple of weeks where snow fall has been significant enough to cause a huge amount of disruption.

here at Hometyre East Lanc's, we have been banging on about the need to use winter tyres. Not only do they provide grip in snow and sleet/sludge but also they disperse water when we have had huge downpours. Normal summer tyres are efficient in temperatures of 7 degrees and above.

So last weeks temperatures of below -5 degrees as you can imagine caught a lot of people out. Vehicles being stuck and a lot of accidents due the lack of grip where widespread across the M65 corridor.

Also in the region we have had a huge number of vehicles aquaplaning too. Is it driver error? or wrong tyres for the season?

Hometyre are passionate about safety and are always happy to check your cars tyres. Whether its at home or your place of work.

The right choice of tyre

Choosing the correct tyre is often over-looked – drivers will often want to choose a well-known premium tyre because they believe that the most expensive tyre will always be the best for them and sadly, sometimes they opt for a tyre because they know the ‘name’ without understanding that the tyre may be inappropriate for their vehicle.

At Hometyre, we are constantly monitoring different brands as they enter the market. We have the expertise to understand which tyre is best on certain vehicles dependent on the mileage, type of driving and function of the vehicle.

According to our client needs, Hometyre source and manage a whole range of tyre types from energy savers through to all-season or winter tyres.

All of these features help us provide top-rate tyre management for them through extremely competitive pricing and an understanding of our client requirements.

We cover the whole of the East Lancashire, with a van thats  fitted with the latest equipment. Because we are mobile we come to you and your vehicle wether bits at home or place of work. Saving you time money and ultimatly lives.

Weather watch fo your tyres.

After three weeks of non stop down pours, two storms from the Atlantic. The East Lancashire and the surrounding areas are really suffering with floods and surface water.

The M65 alone has had two serious accidents in the last 6 days due to vehicles aquaplaning. The tread depth on tyres are so important as how to the cars react.

Vehicles with just 3mm tread compared to a new tyre at 50mph in poor weather conditions need an extra 12metres stopping distance. So vehicles with less and even 1.6mm which is legal is very frightening.

Here at Hometyre East Lancs at this time of year are busy advising people on just such advantages of not only new tyres but also the winter tyres. Winter tyres are especially perfect this wet winery weather because they can disperse better the rain slush or snow due to wider grooves and sipes. They are constructed of a softer rubber compound which is perfect in conditions and temperatures below 7degrees, because summer tyres harden are not able to cope.

Benefits of wheel alignment in Burnley.

The owner of a local taxi rank in Burnley wanted his pride and joy wheel balancing checked. A 7series BMW with 22"inch alloys, specific to the car as he has had lowered at the front and raised at the back(god only knows why).

He obviously spends a lot time and money looking after the vehicle.

We took the car onto the motorway for a test drive and it soon came apparant what the problem was. Has it reached 50mph the vibration through the seat was awful.

When got got back i took off the rear wheels and i was amazed  how badly they had been balanced. without taking any weights off it was 55gramms out already. The weights were scattered all over rim and also on top each other. This was pointed out to the customer he was he has spent nearly two thousand pounds trying to get the car running as smooth as should. From Burnley to Bradford,Oxford and north London to no avail.

I removed all the weights and re balanced all the wheels and sent the customer out on another test drive. The huge smile on his face told me everything was perfect and as smooth as you like.

New Maxxis Tyres for VW Transporter in Accrington

After previously providing 3 Firestone tyres for this customers VW Passat estate, I was asked to check his Business vehicle, a VW Transporter High Top.  The findings were that 1 tyre had a nail on the inner edge of the tread which rendered it unrepairable.  The other tyre was down to 2mm tread and had severe cracking and perishing.

2 Maxxis 205/65/16 Commercial tyres were supplied and fitted at the customer's home, whilst a complementary wheel alignment check was also carried out leaving the VW Transporter in a perfect road worthy condition. To see more about Commercial tyres read more here

Motorhome tyres in Darwen this week

Tuesday was a busy busy day for motorhome owners in Darwen. It seems as though I went from one to another all day. From a Citroen Relay based conversion to a big Hymer. Motorhome tyres are often slightly different than standard commercial tyres. They are able to take a much higher pressure (often up to 85psi).

As we often find, motorhomes are stored not just at peoples houses but also at caravan storage sites around Darwen. They are prone to degradation from exposure to sunlight and standing for long periods. Hence we seldom replace worn motorhome tyres - they are usually badly perished or simply past there usable date of around 5 years old. Read more about this here.
