Mobile tyre Service - Puncture Repairs

Probably one of the most 'grey' areas when it comes to tyre maintenance, yet quite simple in explanation.

Many people often feel that a tyre can always be repaired regardless. That's not the case though! Safety is of paramount importance and should always be considered before expense.

The British Standard, BSAU 159, covering repairs to tyres for motor vehicles used on the public highway, specifies permanent, vulcanised repairs and that the tyre must be removed from the rim and thoroughly examined for secondary damage not visible from an external inspection. The use of liquid sealants does not meet these requirements and, thus, the industry does NOT regard them as a permanent repair.

In order to repair a tyre using a self-vulcanising stem patch, the damage must not have exceeded 6mm in width and should have occured within the central 3/4s of the tyres' treaded area. Punctures that falls out of this area could have caused extensive damage to the cords that form the sidewall structure of the tyre.
A hole will be reamed through the objects entry point into the tyre to prepare passage for the 'stem' of the mushroom shaped repair patch. The inner surface of the tyre will be buffed and prepared with a vulcanising solution and the repair assembly drawn through the tyre.

A tyre punctured on the shoulder or the sidewall cannot be repaired. The fitting of an inner tube to 'repair' a tubeless tyre damaged in these, or any other areas is not permitted.

These repairs form a safe and lasting solution to puncture damaged tyres that have no secondary damage - often caused while driving a vehicle on a partially or fully deflated tyre.

Repairing Run Flat Tyres

There is much debate as to whether a run flat tyre can or should be repaired using conventional methods. The main issue surrounds the re-use of a tyre where its run on flat capability has been used and perhaps used past its recommended distance. In this event, the tyres structural integrity may have been compromised.

Until definitive guidelines have been set by each manufacturer, Hometyre Group technicians will not repair puncture damaged runflat tyres.
